California Algae Association (CalAlgae) Announces Formation of A Statewide Organization of Members Among Companies, Universities, Research Laboratories, Water and Wastewater Agencies, and Interested Persons in the Promotion and Development of Algae Biofuels and Biomass Products as a Renewable Energy and Feedstock
Friday, August 5th, 2011SAN DIEGO, Calif., August 8, 2011—CalAlgae, a non-profit organization, has been formed to promote and support the development of algae biofuels and biomass products as a sustainable, renewable energy and feedstock products.
“The San Diego region has become an emerging hub for development of and research into renewable energy sources, such as algal oil or green crude.”, says Executive Director, Darrell W. Gentry. “San Diego region and California is a leading edge in this emerging industry with over 700 companies and 300 new jobs. Algae biofuels and biomass are proving to be an effective mechanism for CO2 greenhouse gas mitigation and may, in the future, become a significant replacement for fossil fuels.” Gentry says.
CalAlgae also intends to provide a forum for educating the public, elected officials and other interested persons about the importance of these new algae fuels and biomass products in their daily lives and as a possible fossil fuel replacement. CalAlgae will be involved with promoting forums, conference and seminars about how algae’s green crude could mean greater energy independence and security without environmental degradation, less consumer costs, no change to the existing refinery or fueling stations.
Public awareness and education about algal biofuel and biomass product development is vital to understanding why San Diego and California are an important place for the algae industry to be developed. CalAlgae intends to provide a unified voice and form for the and foster the development of such sustainable, renewable energy sources already underway in the San Diego algae biofuel hub and throughout the state of California. In this effort, CalAlgae will identify members, companies, partners and collaborations with other similar organizations and with local and regional universities.
