The RSB has developed a Global Sustainability Standard and Certification System for biofuel production. The RSB Certification System is approved by the European Commission, as proof of compliance with the Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC).

The RSB Global Sustainability Standard represents a global consensus of over 120 organizations including farmers, fuel refiners, regulators and NGOs, and is intended to ensure the sustainability of biofuels production practices while streamlining compliance for industry.

Minister for Resources and Energy, Martin Ferguson formally launched the Fuels and Energy Technology Institute last week, which was followed by the Board’s first meeting.

In a press release from the Minister’s office, Minister Ferguson said: “Advanced biofuels have a wide range of applications, in everything from aviation and shipping to electricity generation.”

“Australia is well placed to capitalise on the opportunities on offer and facilities like these at Curtin University will help us do that,” said the Minister.

Mr Stroud said he was honoured to be contributing to the Institute’s work as a Board Member.

Mexicali Valley, Mexico and Los Angeles, CA February 3, 2012 – Algae producer Aquaviridis and OriginOil, Inc. (OTC/BB: OOIL), the developer of a breakthrough technology to extract oil from algae and an emerging leader in the global algae oil services industry, today announced that Aquaviridis has signed a commercial agreement with OriginOil to help develop the multi-phase algae production rollout at its Mexicali, Mexico site, a potential model for algae sites throughout the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) region, with a focus on desert areas of the American Southwest and Mexico.

OriginOil will provide its expertise to help develop growth and harvesting solutions and implement appropriate OriginOil technologies. The facility will also serve as a test bed for OriginOil innovations.

Aquaviridis is backed by private sector funding, with plans to immediately scale up from research and development to ten acres of pilot algae production by the middle of this year. Commercial scale production capacity is expected by the second quarter of 2013. Aquaviridis selected the Mexicali Valley as a strategic location due to favorable growing conditions, strong local and governmental support, and available sources of carbon dioxide.

The first project under the JV will be for the construction of a 250-module algae biofuels facility in China to be equally funded by both parties.

Algae.Tec Executive Chairman, Roger Stroud, said the facility will be the first of its size and type in the world, being purely focused on algae for the production of transport fuels.

“The equally funded 250-module biofuels facility to be built in Dongying, in Shandong Province, will produce approximately 33 million litres of algae derived transport oil and approximately 33,000 tonnes of biomass per annum at a combined value of over $40million, and capture 137,000 tonnes of waste carbon dioxide. And this should be the first of many,” said Stroud.

The JV will accelerate the Algae.Tec project expansion and roll-out throughout China, targeting corporations and environmental administration authorities.

“China is a country truly focused on a “blue skies” policy. This JV has been formed to help China move towards this important goal. The Algae.Tec technology will reduce unwanted emissions and will convert them into locally produced transport fuels which will add to fuel independence,” said Stroud.

“Algae.Tec is well positioned for massive expansion in the fastest growing economy in the world and will be raising capital shortly to fund this expansion.”

Last week Algae.Tec announced the four-fold expansion of its Atlanta, Georgia based Algae Development & Manufacturing Centre to 70,000 sq ft to scale-up production line capability for existing and upcoming commercial projects.

Last month Algae.Tec signed a biofuels MOU with the European airline Lufthansa, and announced a biofuels production and carbon capture deal with the Sri Lanka subsidiary of industrial giant Holcim, the world’s largest cement and building materials company.

LOS ANGELES–January 13, 2012– OriginOil, Inc. (OTC/BB:OOIL), the developer of a breakthrough technology to extract oil from algae and an emerging leader in the global algae oil services industry, today announced its plans to co-develop an integrated system with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL) for direct conversion of raw algae into a renewable crude oil that can be used by existing petroleum refineries.

“We believe this is a major breakthrough for OriginOil and a major step forward for the algae industry,” said Riggs Eckelberry, OriginOil CEO. “We already lead the industry with our chemical-free, low-energy, continuous high-flow harvesting system.

“From there it’s a natural step to helping algae growers make a direct crude oil replacement right on site, giving them direct access to the existing world market for transportation fuels, including jet fuel. OriginOil’s planned Biocrude System(TM) will integrate its own harvesting system with state-of-the-art biomass processing technology being developed under the recently-announced research agreement with INL, to convert raw algae into barrels of renewable crude oil.

This much cleaner replacement for conventional petroleum will be designed to be compatible with conventional petroleum refineries. Renewable algae crude could also be blended with other biomass sources to improve their performance.

Algae biofuel has the potential to meet the world’s growing energy demand. Due to its high productivity, algae represents a sustainable pathway for helping to reduce capital and operating costs of algae production, due to its high productivity, sequestration of CO2, and broad co-product portfolio.
