Algasol, collaborating with NASA and Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory, will bundle its offering with OriginOil’s Algae Appliance(TM)

Los Angeles, California and Palma De Mallorca, Spain – May 3, 2012 – OriginOil, Inc. (OTC/BB: OOIL), developer of breakthrough technology to convert algae into renewable crude oil, and Algasol Renewables, a technology company with a unique patented technology for low-cost cultivation of micro algae for biofuels and high value products, today announced that they intend to collaborate on the development of an integrated algae growth and harvesting system. By bundling their products, the two companies plan to achieve new levels of cost and performance in micro algae cultivation for biofuels and high value products.

“Algasol’s patented system focuses on how to grow algae in floating bags, and their testing has indicated this can be much more efficient than other cultivation methods,” said Riggs Eckelberry, OriginOil’s CEO. “Now with NASA and Lawrence Berkley working with Algasol, we are excited and eager to contribute our own breakthrough harvesting system to help us collectively achieve a cost breakthrough in the race to compete with petroleum.”

Algasol’s floating bags or photobioreactors (PBRs) can operate in the ocean or in salt water ponds on land. Because they float, Algasol believes their PBRs achieve optimal light exposure with outstanding productivity results and avoid the high temperature and excess salinity often encountered in solar growth systems. Algosol has received a patent in 70 countries for its unique method of floating bags using relative water density.

“With customer demand for an integrated algae production process rising, we need to offer our customers a means of harvesting as well,” said Miguel Verhein, executive director of Algasol Renewables. “We plan to recommend OriginOil’s field-proven chemical-free, high flow and low-energy harvesting system, and once available, the integrated biocrude system they are developing with the Department of Energy.”

Algasol recently entered into a partnership with NASA and the Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy. In addition, Algasol has collaborated and maintains a close relationship with Arizona State University (ASU), and is a cornerstone of the recently inaugurated Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (AzCATI).

OriginOil is working with the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory to implement a downstream fuel conversion process which it plans to offer as part of the Algasol-OriginOil bundle.

Potential “game-changer” algae harvesting process appears to ‘break the emulsion’ to easily remove petroleum organics in frac flowback water

Los Angeles, CA – 25 April, 2012 – OriginOil, Inc. (OTC/BB: OOIL), developer of a breakthrough technology to convert algae into renewable crude oil, announced today that in recent independent third-party testing OriginOil’s algae harvesting process was able to remove 98% of hydrocarbons from a sample of West Texas oil well ‘frac flowback’ water in the first stage alone. The results point to a potentially valuable application of the company’s core water processing technology, originally invented for algae harvesting.

Frac flowback describes water used in a drilling process called ‘hydraulic fracturing’, or ‘fracking’. This test sample was taken from an oil well from which 200,000 gallons of oil-rich water flowed back over a period of two weeks. The water resources firm PACE Engineering supplied the sample and analyzed the results shown in this photo.

“The test results surpassed what we expected of OriginOil when we sent them the sample,” said Andrew Komor , vice president for environmental water at PACE Engineering. “The first pass results showed not 70-75% removal of hydrocarbons as is typical of current technology, but 98%. We realized then that this could be a game-changer for the oil and gas industry.”

Riggs Eckelberry, CEO of OriginOil, commented, “Oil well water cleanup is a multi-stage process. We work at the first stage to ‘break the emulsion’ and quickly remove nearly all of the petroleum without chemicals. We could contribute to the economical re-use of oil well water, a win for the industry and the environment.”

“We intend to aggressively explore oil and gas licensing opportunities while staying the course in algae harvesting,” added Mr. Eckelberry.

This photo depicts samples of the three stages in which OriginOil first removed over 98% of hydrocarbons and other organics (measured by chemical oxygen demand or COD) in the first stage, and clarified the sample in the final stage, eliminating color (PtCo CU) by 99.8%.

Water is produced and used in large quantities in oil and gas operations. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, an average of 3 barrels of contaminated water is generated for each 1 barrel of oil produced. In the United States, the average is 7 barrels of water. Greentech Media reports that energy companies pay between $3 – $12 to dispose of each barrel of produced water, implying a potential world market value between $300 billion and $1 trillion per year.

In recent tests, a technology developed for algae harvesting has shown promise in reclaiming hydraulic fracturing flowback water

Los Angeles, CA – 18 April, 2012 – OriginOil, Inc. (OTC/BB: OOIL), developer of breakthrough technology to convert algae into renewable crude oil, announced today that a breakthrough chemical-free process developed for algae harvesting may also help clean up the water produced in oil well water flooding and hydraulic fracturing.

Using a lab prototype of the technology, OriginOil researchers have been able to clarify samples of flowback water from a Texas oil well carrying heavy concentrations of dissolved organics, known as frac flowback. In this photo, the heavy concentration of petroleum in the oil well water samples was easily separated from water and floated to the surface for removal.

The petroleum industry uses large quantities of water to help fracture or “frac” rock formations deep underground to release more oil and gas. According to the energy industry resource Platts, the global hydraulic fracturing market grew 63 percent from $19 billion in 2010 to $31 billion in 2011, and is projected to rise a further 19 percent in 2012.

“Our research team has learned that extracting petroleum and contaminants from water is very much like extracting algae,” said Riggs Eckelberry, OriginOil CEO. “They are both very hard to remove without using chemicals and heavy machinery. Our innovative chemical-free, high flow and low-energy process holds promise for the billions of gallons of water used daily in the oil and gas industry worldwide.”

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, for every barrel of oil produced globally, an average of three barrels of contaminated water is produced. In the United States, the water to oil ratio (WOR) averages seven barrels of water to one of oil. In the worst cases, the WOR reaches 50 to 1.

The petroleum must be efficiently reclaimed from this water, and the water itself must be cleaned. Greentech Media reports that energy companies pay between $3 – $12 to dispose of each barrel of produced water, implying a potential world market value between $300 billion and $1 trillion per year.

“It seems that in addition to helping create the renewable energy market of the future, we may add value to a massive existing energy market,” said Riggs Eckelberry, OriginOil’s CEO. “We will continue to investigate and report on this promising new application of our technology.”

About OriginOil, Inc.
OriginOil helps algae growers extract oil from algae for use as a feedstock for the commercial production of transportation fuels, chemicals and foods. In a single step, our breakthrough technology efficiently dewaters and breaks down algae for its useful products, overcoming one of the greatest challenges in making algae a viable replacement for petroleum. As an emerging leader in the global algae oil services field, OriginOil supports its core algae extraction technology with an array of process innovations for some of the world’s most successful algae growers and refiners, just as pioneers like Schlumberger, Halliburton and Baker Hughes have done in the oilfield services industry.

Cooperation with CRI Catalyst Company opens way for investment in multi-biomass to biofuel infrastructure

AUCKLAND. NZ, April 18, 2012:

Kiwi clean energy company Aquaflow Bionomic Corporation believes it is poised to make refining next generation biofuels a commercial reality in New Zealand and in overseas projects within three years.

Aquaflow announced today it has executed a technology cooperation agreement with CRI Catalyst Company (CRI). CRI has exclusive global sublicensing rights to IH2 technology, a commercially viable renewable fuel process developed by Gas Technology Institute (GTI), which is ready for infrastructure investment.

The companies had been working together previously under a Joint Testing and Evaluation Agreement to bring together Aquaflow’s unique capability with algae, mixed and varied feedstocks, and CRI’s license to IH2 technology, to prove their commercial effectiveness in producing hydrocarbon fuel.

Aquaflow director Nick Gerritsen explains “Aquaflow believes it now has a world-leading multi-biomass to biofuels capability and technology offering. This is a robust and highly integrated technology package which can leapfrog other biomass to biofuel technologies because it goes straight to blended fuel stock and avoids intermediate pathways.

“We should be able to produce renewable hydrocarbon fuel that is equivalent to fossil fuel at a cost that is highly competitive with the current per barrel price of crude oil.”

Gerritsen says New Zealand could turn its biomass into enough carbon-neutral biofuel to meet its renewable fuels’ requirement within ten years.

“While this could be achieved without carbon taxes or Government subsidies, we believe this is nationally significant and the NZ Government’s support is welcome.”

The technology could be replicated in other parts of the world where suitable feedstocks and waste streams exist.

“We believe this is a game changer. The current estimation of the IH2 process economics suggests it to be among the most economical for renewable hydrocarbon fuel production. The combination of Aquaflow multi-biomass feed and CRI IH2 technologies means that any biomass – algae, wood waste, agricultural waste such as vine prunings, invasive weeds like gorse or broom and solid waste, can be turned into renewable transport fuels.”

“The technology is self-sufficient and means that regional fuel refining is now a real possibility. New Zealand has the opportunity to take advantage of this breakthrough.
The ability to produce our own commercially viable biofuels which integrate with current infrastructure would increase our economic competitiveness, improve our environmental performance and reduce our reliance upon imported crude oil. Benefits would flow through our economy in terms of new jobs and boosts to regional businesses.”

Gerritsen says the next step is to secure the investment needed to build the organisational capability and capacity to execute the company’s project pipeline.

“Plans to demonstrate IH2 technology at the 5-200t/d scale are currently underway. We have a viable technology that’s “ready to go” and that’s what investors are looking for.

“Aquaflow is leading the way with the seamless integration of algae into a variety of feedstocks to produce drop-in fuels and chemicals. This approach gives us the flexibility to develop a multi-biomass feedstock mix specific to available resources worldwide. Aquaflow believes this is a breakthrough for biofuels and a significant advance for algae-based renewable fuels.

”Reaching this stage is a significant achievement for Aquaflow, which has been operating ‘under the radar’ as it worked on the multi-biomass approach and lined up the projects,” comments Gerritsen.

New directors appointed
Aquaflow recently welcomed Roger Gower and Anake Goodall to its Board.

Anake Goodall was chief executive officer of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu from 2007 until 2011, and before that managed Ngāi Tahu’s historical Treaty settlement process.

Fluid Imaging Technologies Supports Biofuel, Nutraceutical Research Worldwide

Yarmouth, ME, USA: Laboratory instrumentation manufacturer Fluid Imaging Technologies, Yarmouth, Maine (www.fluidimaging.com) has launched a scholarship program offering students up to US $1,000.00 per year for up to four consecutive years. To be awarded annually to high school, college, graduate or post-graduate level students studying algae technology, the FlowCAM® Collaboration Scholarship Program was devised to facilitate phycological research for advancing knowledge of algal cells including their use as a feedstock in the production of biofuels and as an ingredient in functional foods, beverages and nutraceuticals.

Open to students attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Arizona State University, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, University of California San Diego, Aberystwyth University, UK and Tel Aviv University, Israel, among nearly 50 other educational institutions worldwide, the scholarship helps students gain experience using the same FlowCAM imaging particle analysis technology in use at hundreds of research facilities on six continents. The scholarships may be awarded for the 2012/2013 academic year by partner institutions ordering one or more FlowCAM systems by August 30, 2012. Students may apply through their academic institutions. A complete list of institutions offering approved algae courses of study is online at FluidImaging.com.

The FlowCAM particle imaging and analysis instrumentation automatically takes high resolution, digital images of individual particles and microorganisms, measures and characterizes each one based on up to 32 different parameters and saves them for analysis. Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC), San Diego, Calif., Santa Fe Community College, N.M., BioMarine Fuels, Inc., Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Sapphire Energy, San Diego, Calif. and Las Cruces, N.M. are among the organizations using the FlowCAM to study algae.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (April 9, 2012) — It’s about breakthroughs, brainchilds, and bonanzas, and Algae Biosciences Incorporated will be adding its own voice to the buzz.

The Algae Technology Platform Americas conference will be held from Wednesday, April 11 through Friday, April 13 at San Diego’s Kona Kai Spa and Resort, with some of the leading minds from the algae industry arriving from as far away as Belgium, Germany, and Austria. The conference will begin with investors meeting developers for a full day’s worth of presentations, and wrap up with a two-day look at industry-leading technologies as well as market trends, challenges and applications.

Dr. Mark Edwards, AlgaeBio’s Vice-President of Corporate Development and Marketing, and Robert Thompson, AlgaeBio’s Chairman, will be making presentations and leading discussions at a gathering that bills itself as the Americas’ leading commercial and technological forum for algae investors, entrepreneurs, process developers, and formulators.

“This conference has a good mix of science, business, and industry,” says Dr. Edwards. “The delegates get a good picture of the industry through various businesses, technologies, and market reviews. And the interaction with investors is critical, of course, because investors enable algae projects.”

Algae Biosciences Incorporated will soon begin commercial production of its ultra-pure omega-3 fatty acid oils, sourced from marine algae and grown in abundant Arizona sunlight, at its production facilities in the high desert plains near Holbrook.

Dr. Edwards will be making a pair of solo presentations at the Algae Technology Platform Americas conference.

On Wednesday, April 11, he’ll be introducing Algae Industry Breakthroughs for 30 minutes, beginning at 11 a.m., and on Thursday, April 12, at 2 p.m., he’ll lead a 30-minute presentation entitled Market Review of Algae-Based Functional Foods Ingredients and Medicines: Antioxidants, Proteins, and Polysaccharides.

Dr. Edwards and Thompson will both be involved in a Wednesday round-table discussion called Venture Capital Opportunities for the New Start-ups and More Mature Established Companies.

Dr. Edwards’ presentation on algae breakthroughs will include: a digital-imaging particle analysis instrument; a bioreactor matrix system; AlgaeBio’s own SAGE (Sunshine to Algae Generates Energy) Solutions model, which minimizes fossil resources and energy costs in its production cycle; and Arizona State University Polytechnic’s Arizona Center for Algae Technology (AzCATI) algae test bed — the only system of its kind in the world.

“That AzCATI test bed is going to give us a lot more answers. It’ll allow us to estimate what a grower can expect in terms of yield,” says Dr. Edwards, “and that’s going to be a huge help. Without those numbers, you simply can’t get financing.”

As for Dr. Edwards’ presentation on algae-based ingredients and medicines, “they’re going to be cheaper to produce, in the not-too-distant future, than through conventional agriculture,” he says. “As the cost of fossil resources goes up, and the ability for us to produce more algae also goes up, we’ll end up with algae-based commodities that are healthier and cheaper for the consumer.”

AlgaeBio and Global Health Trax of Vista, Calif., have in place a sales and distribution contract that gives GHT exclusive rights to purchase and distribute AlgaeBio’s ultra-pure, omega-3 fatty acid oils to the nutraceutical, food additive, and animal feed markets.

Later this spring, AlgaeBio will complete a $5-million, first-phase expansion process at its production facilities, and begin large-scale commercial production of its highly regarded algal oils. The initial output of AlgaeBio’s algal oils will contain equal parts of the long-chain essential fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) at a blended ratio of 40 per cent.

While at San Diego, Dr. Edwards and his colleague Robert Henrikson will crown the winners of the 2011 International Algae Competition. In early March, the finalists were named in a trio of categories — Algae Landscape Design, Algae Production Systems, and Algae Foods and Recipes. More than $10,000 in cash prizes will be awarded on Thursday, April 12 at 5:30 p.m.

“The visuals are designed to inspire people in the algae space, and make algae tangible,” says Dr. Edwards. “Thanks to these visualizations of what our future will look like with algae, we believe we’ll get a lot of people on board.”

The 2011 International Algae Competition saw a total of 137 entries submitted by hopefuls from 40 countries.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (March 28, 2012) — Responses like these are sure to leave a good taste in algal omega-3 producers’ mouths.

Results of a U.S. consumer survey, conducted by Salt Lake City-based Discovery Research Group and released last week, suggest that more than a third of American supplement users — 37 per cent, to be exact — would prefer a source other than fish oil for their omega-3s.

Algae Biosciences Incorporated will soon begin commercial production of its ultra-pure omega-3 fatty acid oils, sourced from marine algae and grown in abundant Arizona sunlight, at its production facilities in the high desert plains near Holbrook.

When asked why they disliked fish oil, survey respondents, as reported by NutraIngredients-USA.com, gave reasons such as bad taste, bad aftertaste, fishy burps, bad smell, and large capsule size.

Dr. Mark Edwards, AlgaeBio’s Vice-President of Corporate Development and Marketing, has long felt the so-called “yuck factor” is a significant deterrent for fish oil-sourced omega-3 supplements.

“Many people are turned off by the unpleasant fish taste — and, even worse, the awful fishy burps — after ingesting omega-3 from fish,” says Dr. Edwards.

“Depleting the small fish in the ocean, and disrupting the marine food chain, is also a strong argument against fish-based omega-3s,” adds Dr. Edwards, a noted author and Arizona State University professor, whose recent work has focused on world hunger and sustainable energy with green solutions. “Globally, virtually every fishery is in decline due to overexploitation.”

In all, 705 American consumers were polled in the Discovery Research Group survey — all of whom take a multivitamin or other nutritional supplement, and confirmed an interest in overall health and fitness.

The survey was carried out in partnership with krill oil supplier Aker BioMarine Antarctic US — and NutraIngredients-USA.com reports that an executive with the company “acknowledged that algal omega-3 suppliers would also draw encouragement from the findings.”

Algal-based omega-3 supplements are too new for any comprehensive research to have been carried out, but Dr. Edwards says “we believe there will be no identifiable taste or aftertaste” to the vegetable-based oils.

Slightly less than half of respondents polled in the Discovery Research Group/Aker BioMarine survey, or 48 per cent, take an omega-3 supplement. As for their reasons — with multiple responses allowed — 64 per cent answered “general health,” 58 per cent replied “heart health,” 27 per cent said “brain/cognitive health,” 26 per cent replied “joint health,” and 17 per cent said “healthy skin.”

Eric Anderson, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing at Aker BioMarine Antarctic US, told NutraIngredients-USA: “Clearly there is a market for consumers who want omega-3 supplements to increase these essential fatty acids in the diet, but do not want fish oil.”

New evidence has emerged from Sheffield Hallam University that Seagreens® seaweed can be used as an acceptable alternative to salt in bread and contribute to weight loss and management.

An appetite study by the Centre for Food Innovation found that participants who ate bread enriched with the company’s Ascophyllum nodosum were found to be less hungry and consume fewer calories than when they ate a normal ‘control’ bread in an identical test a week later.

Researchers say that the reduced energy intake caused by eating seaweed-enriched bread may be helpful in weight management.

The study, supported by the Seaweed Health Foundation, tested the effect of the seaweed-enriched bread eaten at breakfast time on energy intake at lunch time in 12 overweight, but otherwise healthy males.

Over the course of the morning, blood glucose and blood cholesterol were measured, along with ratings of hunger and fullness.

At lunch time, participants were provided with a meal consisting of pasta and a tomato-based sauce, and researchers weighed how much they ate.

After consuming the seaweed enriched bread, participants consumed significantly less energy (178kcal) at lunch time, than when they consumed the control bread. A daily energy deficit of ~100kcal may help prevent weight gain.

Energy intake was also reduced over the following 24 hours but there were no significant differences in blood glucose or blood cholesterol at any time point suggesting that the seaweed acted as a bulking agent, increasing gastric stretch to a greater extent than the control bread.

Lecturer in nutrition Anna Hall, who led the study, said that the results are a positive contribution to the evidence surrounding seaweed and health.

She said: “This study shows that in the short term, consumption of this bread reduces energy intake, which in the long term may contribute to weight loss or weight management. We hope to undertake long-term trials, which are needed in order to potentially produce such results.”

Anna won the Alpro Foundation Award for Masters in the UK for her thesis about food and nutrition and its impact on health, the environment or the economy.

Results from this study suggested that seaweed presents an attractive option for food manufacturers by aiming to maximise the health-giving potential of their dietary fibre rich products.

Dr Craig Rose from The Seaweed Foundation, added: “Seaweed for food and health is a rapidly emerging trend, with multiple benefits from a sustainable and underutilised resource.”

The Centre for Food Innovation at Sheffield Hallam has been at the forefront of research into using seaweed as a replacement for salt, working closely with Seagreens and the British Seaweed Foundation.

National Algae Association is pleased to announce the opening of a Testing Center. This first-of-its-kind initiative has been on-going as a part of NAA’s algae production incubator program to assist new algae start-up companies test commercial photobioreactors, harvestors and extraction systems before entering the algae industry. Potential investors are tired of hearing about what algae might be able to do – they want to see production capabilities, data and turn-key algae production systems all in one place.

The Testing Center is a test-bed for taking algae technologies out of the lab to be confirmed and to see if they have the capability to scale on acreage or in commercial buildings. Only a small percentage of algae technologies can scale. The Testing Center independently confirms algae technologies and prove whether or not they can scale or not. Algae researchers finally have the opportunity to collaborate with other algae researchers and commercial equipment manufacturers in one place to test their lab-scale technologies in a commercial environment at the NAA Testing Facility.

Data is key to to algae production scale-up. The Testing Center tests growth rates, inputs of nutrients and CO2, along with measuring harvesting and extraction data, while simultaneously measuring dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, ORP, salinity and temperature, using full data logging developed for the algae industry.

“The Testing Center has been made possible because of the dedication of equipment and material providers who belief that algae can help to reduce US dependence on foreign oil” according to NAA Executive Director Barry Cohen. “This particular initiative shows us what can be done with hard work, collaboration and commitment to the scale-up of the commercial algae production industry, not government sponsored funding and research. Without companies like Georg Fischer, Harvel, Solar-Components, Bayliff Enterprises, Yokogawa, YSI, Gothic Arch Greenhouses, Algae Technology Ventures, Airgas and Commercial Algae Management, we wouldn’t be making this announcement today.”

Cohen went on to say, “Based on my experiences with the academic community and with the US Department of Energy, there is not a doubt in my mind why the DoE-funded projects have not led to commercial production in the US! By the time DOE-FOA-0000615 Advancements in Sustainable Algal Production (ASAP) gets funded in August, this initiative will be well under way. Our successes cannot be accomplished by hoping for future grant money and stocking labs with expensive lab equipment with disregard for obligations, commitments and milestones – this is something that’s going to take the business community, led by do-ers, not talkers – those whose ulterior motives are genuinely to help reduce our dependence on foreign oil, to become energy independent and create jobs.

NAA has made it this far without the any assistance of DoE research grants – imagine what it could do with a little support!”
